The best way to learn how to train your dog is to take a class with a reputable trainer or training center. This article is my personal opinion and not necessarily the opinion of any other person or organization. You the reader are responsible for seeking a qualified trainer to train you to train your dog. This article is only to give you some insight into how much fun it is to teach your dog and how satisfing it is when your efforts are rewarded with a stronger bond with your dog and a dog that responds to you in a positive manner.

Ok. So now you have a German Shepherd and you want to learn how to.....

Well, there are several avenues you can take to learn more about our breed and your dog in particular. You can

  • read books, articles, magazines, or internet pages
  • join a breed club and hang out with your new friends that share a common interest in training
  • watch video's of the subject you are most interest in
  • sign up for a series of classes at a dog training facility in your area

I think the best way is all of the above. There is no quick way to learn about your breed or to learn how to train your dog, nor is there a way to do it for free. One way or another you end up having to pay to learn.

So, having said that, the next step for you is to invest in the method that best suits your lifestyle. For me, over the years, I have done all of the above. My favorite method is the hands on training classes. I love to train my dog myself, so structured classes with a good trainer at a good facility is the answer for me and is the advice I give to anyone that ask me.

The advantages of a good training facility with good trainers are

  • that they are there to train you to train your dog. Your success, and that of your dog, depends entirely on you and how much time and effort you put into practicing with your dog
  • they show you how to do the exercise
  • give you a chance to practice in class
  • give you pointers to help you succeed with your particular dog
  • give you a chance to ask questions in class
  • give you a way to contact the instructor between classes
  • give you a few days to go home and practice
  • give you a chance to show what you taught your dog between classes
