Above: The William Goldbecker Memorial Trophy.
A challenge trophy that was to be competed for annually and to be held by the GSDC/GNH until the next competition. For permanent possession, it was to be won three times by the same owner, but not necessarily with the same dog. In 2006 Farmil's Party of One retired the trophy from the novice class, going winners bitch, Best of Winners AND BEST OPPOSITE SEX.

Marge Dolan of Dolmar Kennels. Her breedings impacted our breeding programs for many years after she past. Many of us still tell a Marge story every once in a while. She serverd as the treasure for many years.
The following history printed on the inside cover of our Oct 12 1991 Show Catalog. On the opposite page is a memorial to Richard Causano. This show was dedicated to his memory.
In 1950, the German Shepherd Dog Club of Greater New Haven was formed and dedicated to the enhancement of the breed in our area. Led by our first President William Goldbecker, a Fire Chief in New Haven, he brought to the membership the knowledge he had acquired from his native Cologne, Germany, about the German Shepherd Dog.
It was not until 1960/1961, that our Club obtained official recognition from the German Shepherd Dog Club of America and the American Kennel Club. Our first show was held in 1961. Amoung the small group of fanciers who gave life and vigor to the Club was Betsy Gomez and Richard Cusano, and several others.
Since the first show in Wallingford, Connecticut, eminent American & Canadian specialists in the breed judged our specialties including Walter Martin of the Wienerau Kennels who came from Germany to Judge our fifteenth Annual Specialty Show on October 9th 1976.
The Greater New Haven Club is also committed to the total German Shepherd Dog and likewise offers annual obedience trials for fanciers throughout the country.
Led today by our President Arnold Conroy, we are a vigorous club, promoting activities for the novice as well as the seasoned exhibitor and breeder. Our club, yearly, honors many of its members who have distinguished themselves in breed activities. Today our club claims some of the top breeders in the country and some of the most successful exhibitors in the United States.
CONROY, ARNOLD E., SR.,
Jan. 17, 1928 - February 28, 2015
Arnold held many positions in our club from working member to president for many years. He always was willing to help with set-up and tear-down, and he and Barb often had us over to their home for handling classes. He always attended our meetings, events, and after show dinners. He always was willing to lend a helping hand when asked or when he saw someone in need.
Frank A. Lopez Esq.
Aug. 19, 1926 - May 2, 2011
Frank had always attended the GSDC of Greater New Haven events because of his close friendship
with Captain William ('Bill') Goldbecker. He joined the club close to the time that Polo was awarded the Grand Victor and Best of Breed title at the 1988 National Specialty Show. Frank was also a member for many years of the German Shepherd Dog Club of America and was a founding member of the United Schutzhund Club of America (holding member card #3). He imported many top dogs from Germany including the 1958 U.S. Grand Victor Yasko v Zental Sch3. He received the GSDCA's Golden Membership Award in 2010 and the President's Award in 1999 for his legal assistance to the GSDCA in several crucial litigations. He was always a friend of the German Shepherd Dog whether a Champion or Companion.
